Nothing OS 5.0 brings Android 17, smarter AI tools and a much-needed visual refresh

Nothing is giving its phones a sizeable software makeover. The London-based company has announced Nothing OS 5.0, an update built on Android 17 that brings more than 80 changes across the interface, personalisation, performance and AI features.

The open beta begins Aug. 26 at 3:30 p.m. IST — 10 a.m. UTC, 6 a.m. EDT in the US and eastern Canada, 5 a.m. CDT, 4 a.m. MDT, 3 a.m. PDT in western Canada, 11 a.m. BST in the UK and noon CEST across central Europe — starting with Phone (3). Nothing says more eligible devices will follow, with the rollout timeline varying by model. As ever with beta software, “available” does not necessarily mean “ready to install on the phone you need for work”.

Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a redesigned home screen as an additional theme alongside the company’s existing monochrome-inspired style. Transparent widgets and a layered search bar are intended to give the interface more depth, while apps such as Gallery receive the same softer treatment.

A new adaptive colour system takes its cues from the wallpaper. App icons and widgets can receive subtle tints, and the 1×1 Quick Settings widgets update to match the wallpaper’s dominant colour. The status bar, Settings, Camera and Gallery also get revised icons, spacing and animations.

Nothing is switching to the Geist typeface, with updated text sizing, corner shapes, blur effects and iconography across the system. It is the sort of housekeeping that determines whether a phone feels thoughtfully designed or like five different teams argued over the settings menu and nobody won.

Personalisation gets some practical additions too. Two new lock-screen clock faces — Gooey and Micrographics — offer either bold fluid shapes or a more hardware-inspired layout showing the date, weather and upcoming meetings. Users can also move multiple apps and widgets at once instead of dragging them around one by one like digital furniture.

New Collector and Away Time widgets add a playful angle. Collector creates a visual display of favourite objects captured through Camera or Gallery, while Away Time tracks phone-free breaks and how screen-free time changes during the week.

The Glyph Interface now gets its own dedicated app for sounds, ringtones, schedules and other settings. A new Glyph Timer widget can start a countdown from the home screen, with the rear display showing the remaining time.

Under the hood, Nothing says the update improves touch response, background app retention and resource management. On-device intelligence learns which apps are used most often and keeps them ready to launch, while overnight maintenance is intended to optimise memory over time.

AI features are expanding as well. Essential Voice gains faster, cleaner transcription and can better distinguish between a list and a paragraph. Essential Space adds Smart Collections, which recommend ways to organise saved content, plus Model Context Protocol support for selected AI tools that can search and read Essential Space data.

Essential Apps Builder is now a standalone phone app. Users can describe an app, build it and deploy it directly from the handset without coding. That sounds impressive, although the real test will be whether it produces something useful or another glorified to-do list wearing an AI hat.

Android 17 also brings separate Notifications and Quick Settings panels, cross-platform Quick Share between iPhone and Android through a QR code, clearer privacy indicators and updated location permissions. Other changes include improved Dark Theme support, redesigned Recents and higher-brightness HDR viewing.

Nothing OS 5.0 is a substantial update rather than a cosmetic icon shuffle. The open beta starts with Phone (3) on Aug. 26, and the sensible move for everyone else is to wait for their device’s rollout date and the first round of bug reports. Eighty updates are only exciting when at least 79 of them work.
